On September 07, 2013,
China President Xi Jinping awakened the sleeping soul of a vast ancient network
when he delivered an historic speech at the Nazarbayev University in Astana,
Kazakhstan. Little did that small audience know that the announcement he was
making that day, would reverberate through the chords of thousands of years of
history of merchant trade and cultural exchange between East and West; and
resurrect the largest internet of information and interaction which ever
existed between and among civilizations since the beginning of time.
In his speech,
President Xi Jinping brought his audience to a place in time in the very distant
past when he said: ‘Over
2,100 years ago during China's Han Dynasty, a Chinese envoy Zhang Qian was sent
to Central Asia twice with a mission of peace and friendship. His journeys
opened the door to friendly contacts between China and Central Asian countries
as well as the Silk Road linking east and west, Asia and Europe.’

As if
himself traveling on the back of a camel to that ancient past, President Xi Jinping
said, ‘Shaanxi, my home province, is
right at the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Today, as I stand here
and look back at that episode of history, I could almost hear the camel bells
echoing in the mountains and see the wisp of smoke rising from the desert. It
has brought me close to the place I am visiting.’
On
that day, President Xi Jinping made an announcement that historians in the
future would no doubt call a turning point in world history. President Xi announced
the rejuvenation of the ancient Silk Road by forming an economic belt along the
path and routes of the ancient Silk Road.
He said,
‘To forge closer economic ties, deepen
cooperation and expand development space in the Eurasian region, we should take
an innovative approach and jointly build an "economic belt along the Silk
Road". This will be a great undertaking benefitting the people of all
countries along the route. To turn this into a reality, we may start with work
in individual areas and link them up over time to cover the whole region.’
So began
the New Silk Road.

新丝绸之路 (Xīn sīchóu
zhī lù) New Silk Road is an online
community of the emergent New Silk Road. It will feature the community of

the New Silk Road.
